Everest Region
The Everest region is one of the most popular areas for trekking in Nepal, with a magic consequential from its high Everest Region peaks and the exploits of renowned mountaineers. The Everest is justifiably renowned, not only because it encompasses Mt. Everest, the world’s highest mountain (8850m), but also because of its unusual Sherpa villages and monasteries. The main goal of many Everest treks is the Everest Base Camp at an elevation of about 5340m. You cannot see Everest from the base camp, so most trekkers also climb Kala Pattar, a 5545m bump on the southern flank of Pumori (7145m). From Kala Pattar there is a dramatic view of Mt. Everest. When trekking to Everest Base Camp and other high altitude parts of this region one should be aware of acute mountain sickness (AMS). AMS is caused by climbing too quickly to a high elevation. If you suffer symptoms of altitude sickness, you can still make a worthwhile trek to lower elevation destinations such as Namche Bazaar and the surrounding mountain areas. Just a few days trekking from Lukla, Namche Bazaar is where most trekkers take a day to acclimatize to the high altitude. Wherever you choose to trek in the Everest region you will be treated to some of the most dramatic scenery and fascinating cultural experiences anywhere in the world.
