Trip Info

Jumla Dunai Trek is in Dolpo, Dolpo is a remote area, most of which is protected by the Shey Phoksumdo National Park. The Dollop region has been bypassed by development and, until newly, by tourism. Although a few anthropologists and geographers had explored the area, the whole district was closed to foreigners until 1989. Today it still receive only a few guests and one can explore parts of Nepal starting from Jamal, one of the world’s highest rice-growing areas in the world, during the Tila valley with its unique red rice until we reach Duane. This trek can be extended on request with 5 days to Phoksumdo Lake, ingoing the inside parts of Dollop and views over the deepest lake of Nepal.

Overview

Jumla Dunai Trek is a remarkable journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and least explored regions Dolpo. Known for its rugged landscapes, ancient Tibetan-influenced culture, and untouched natural beauty, Dolpo remains a hidden treasure for trekkers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience away from crowded trails. This trek offers a rare opportunity to explore a region that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, protected both by geography and conservation efforts.

Jumla Dunai Trek

Dolpo lies in northwestern Nepal and is one of the most isolated areas of the country. A large portion of the region falls under the protection of Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park. The park is home to diverse ecosystems, rare wildlife such as the snow leopard and blue sheep, and dramatic landscapes ranging from deep river gorges to high alpine meadows. Due to its remoteness and protected status, Dolpo has largely been bypassed by modern development, allowing travelers to experience Nepal in its most raw and pristine form.

For many years, Dolpo was completely closed to foreign visitors. Until 1989, the entire district was restricted due to its sensitive location near the Tibetan border. Only a handful of anthropologists, geographers, and researchers were granted special permission to enter the region. As a result, Dolpo’s culture, traditions, and environment remained exceptionally well preserved. Even today, tourism in Dolpo is minimal compared to other trekking destinations in Nepal, making the Jumla–Dunai Trek ideal for those who value solitude, authenticity, and cultural depth.

Jumla Dunai Trek begins in Jumla, a fascinating mountain town and one of the highest rice-growing areas in the world. Located at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters, Jumla is famous for its fertile Tila Valley and its unique variety of red rice, which thrives in the cool Himalayan climate. The valley is surrounded by rolling hills, pine forests, and snow-capped peaks, offering a peaceful and scenic starting point for the journey. Jumla itself provides a glimpse into rural mountain life, where agriculture remains central to daily living.

From Jumla, the trail gradually follows the Tila Valley, leading trekkers through remote villages, terraced fields, and forested hillsides. Along the way, travelers encounter friendly local communities who still follow traditional lifestyles influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and ancient Bon practices. Stone houses, prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens are common sights, reflecting the strong spiritual identity of the region. The slow pace of life and limited outside influence make cultural interactions especially meaningful.

As the trek progresses, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Narrow trails wind through deep gorges, high passes, and rugged terrain shaped by centuries of natural forces. The route eventually leads to Dunai, the administrative headquarters of Dolpo district, situated along the banks of the Thuli Bheri River. Dunai serves as a gateway to the inner regions of Dolpo and marks the conclusion of the standard Jumla–Dunai Trek. Reaching Dunai feels like a significant achievement, as it represents a true journey through some of Nepal’s least accessible terrain.

For trekkers seeking an even deeper exploration, this trek can be extended by approximately five days to Phoksundo Lake, one of Nepal’s most spectacular natural wonders. This extension takes travelers into the inner parts of Dolpo, crossing higher passes and more isolated landscapes. Phoksundo Lake, renowned as the deepest lake in Nepal, is famous for its striking turquoise-blue waters set against barren cliffs and snow-covered peaks. The serene beauty of the lake, combined with the spiritual atmosphere of nearby monasteries, makes this extension an unforgettable highlight.
